P. schilleriana v. purpurea
This plant's first flower opened yesterday, while the second opened today; a third is almost open on the other side of the spray which will have 6 flowers total. A second spike has 3 more buds. I'll take it for the plant's first blooming!

John! How beautiful! I am envious. How old is that plant?
Today: no guns were drawn, nor knives unsheathed. We all survived with only one minor I incident. More tomorrow...

I bought it as a blooming sized seedling in the Spring, so I've had the plant perhaps 8 months. The leaf-span is about 14 inches, and as a bonus it has a basal keiki with about a 4" leaf-span. I have 4 or 5 seedlings with leaf-spans a bit under half this plant, each of which has thrown a spike, one of which has two; I'm debating whether or not to allow them to go to bloom this year (and probably will snip the two least vigorous). Anyway, THIS plant is large and quite vigorous, with 7 or 8 leaves, so I'm kind of amazed that it was unbloomed when I got it.
I'm glad that everyone survived the day, and hope the survival was mental as well!

Sounds like the better Polish weddings I recall from childhood.

Nice flower shaped. The spotting on the basal part of the petals is more than normal, possibly a 4n... are the leaves mottled silvery on top with deep purple under? What are the parents and source of these plants I wonder?

Thanks, I'm really quite happy with the shape, and love how it's colored like a pointilist painting. It's not labeled as a 4n; the leaves are a deep, rich green with mottling of a slightly lighter green. I have no idea the parents or source. When I bought it the selling greenhouse only knew that it was the said species and said it seemed strangely huge to have not bloomed (with which I agreed).

Spectacular bloom, with amazing colour and patterning.
