I bought this Phalaenopsis hieroglyphica Spring 2013 from a local grower, it had never bloomed before. In August of 2013 I saw two flower spikes start to grow and posted pictures of the spikes here on OB. Guess that was enough to jinx it, because those two spikes stalled after growing about 3/4 inch. Something was very wrong with my culture, because the new leaf that had been growing very well also stalled and never grew anymore. I let the plant sit for a couple of months hoping those spikes would start growing again, and then finally gave up and repotted it. I put it in an aquarium with humidity around 75% and max daily temp of 80 and lows at night to about 72 and it grew two new big leaves and tons of roots. It rewarded me with two new spikes that appeared mid-May 2014 and all the buds finally opened last week. Two spikes with 7 flowers total, I'm quite happy with my first blooming of this plant. The flowers have a light rose-like fragrance, very pleasant. The old spikes are still buried under a bunch of roots, I wonder if anything will ever become of them?
First pic is of four buds on the left side spike:
Next pic is of the three flowers on the right side spike:
And the third pic is of the whole plant from the front. You can see the small leaf, third from the top on the right, that stalled at the same time that the first two spikes stalled. Two new big leafs grew out next, and the old spikes are buried under that mass of roots.
I love this plant, it is definitely my favorite flower so far that I have managed to bloom.
