Funny that you brought this thread back up!

This plant was making buds, notice I say was.

Last time I checked on them was Sunday, its been raining here and a bit humid so I knew no-one would need to be watered.

Well I guess someone or something took refuge in the greenhouse. Most of the plants that were making buds or about to bloom are now bare along with bite marks on new growth with some right down to almost the crown!
And I mean bite marks like those of a child, not little bug nibble marks!
All damage was in the one section where I had grouped budding plants on the upper shelf. None of the other plants or the seedlings (which were on the lower shelves) were touched! Not a one!!!!!

A few escaped unscathed, so their being brought back into the house to hopefully bloom. Fingers crossed they don't blast.

Would love to be able to spray but we're supposed to get really heavy T-storms today and I don't think they would have time to dry off.

Needless to say I won't be having alot of pics to share this year.

Thanks for asking though!

Sorry about your buds. Could an animal have done it? I doubt a kid would bite a bud down to the crown, very strange.

DeaC, I've had the same set-up for 4 years now and this is the first time I've had any damage to my plants so I am p'od and surprised but not much I can do about it, short of bringing everything back into house. All the plants that got attacked look horrendous and it'll be years before the damage gets covered up enough for my taste. Will be going out tonight with a flashlight to see if I can catch the culprit/s. All that were left with buds/spike are now inside.

wintergirl, lol, yeah that's what I was getting at, animals not bugs. Was just using the bites like a child to illustrate how big they are.

Thanks to you both for the sympathy!

Oh no! so sorry

Slugs can make massive damage like that, that looks like a mammal taking bites out of it.

Oh gosh Judi! So sorry to hear this. My heart just dropped when I read your thread. Whenever I see that happen to my plants (usually my clumsy self knocking buds off), I get so sad... But on the bright side, the plant will use energy to grow and bloom better next year! Hope you catch the little bugger that did this to your budding collection!

It could have been rats. They can eat their way through almost anything. All of my zinnia seedlings were gone one morning with a giant turd sitting in the middle of the nibbled massacre as thanks. Check around your tables for presents
