Peloric Phalaenopsis equestris
I got this from Oak Hill Gardens last year. I was a bit disappointed at first because it was inter-variety cross (var. rosea x f. aurea) which wasn't mentioned. The plant got minor crown rot last summer, but it flowered any way. Flowers were peloric and were not opening fully last year. I wasn't sure the deformity was caused by the health issue. This year (after maturing the basal keiki within a year), the flowers are fully open, but they are peloric again. Another person, who got the same cross from Oak Hill, said his/hers was peloric, too. So this is likely to be in the genetics. I wonder if Oak Hill used peloric parents, or if this particular cross caused it. It looks like sterile, though.

Every day I am astonished on this board. I have no clue what you guys are talking about, however this is absolutely gorgeous! I had no clue there is such a Phalaenopsis. I would like to get one some day. Does it have same growing requirements as regular Phals?

Thanks. Carrie, I agree that this is interesting, but I'm not a big fun of peloric in general. Tommy, P. equestris is probably one of the easiest orchids. Note that this is a mutation: all of the 3 petals became the "lip" (instead of 1 lip + 2 normal petals). That's why it doesn't look like a normal Phal. This peloric mutation seems to occur frequently in some species (including P. equestris). There are different degrees of peloric-ness. This one is highly symmetric, and even the column is symmetric (and that's why it is probably sterile).

Naoki, see, and I would take this in a heartbeat! I love strange looking plants and colors, I wish I could buy this mutant, in this stage of mutation:-))))) To me this is gorgeous bloom!

That one looks good! I really like a couple of the peloric P. equestris I've seen.

I purchased an equestris from Oak Hill this year. It hasn't flowered for me yet as it's not blooming size. I don't think it's peloric, but I would LOVE it if it was! Your blooms are so beautiful!!!!
I love equestris. They are such beautiful plants! Your flower is so unique!! Great growing!
