Mystery phalaenopsis HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Default Mystery phalaenopsis HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello fellow members, i recently bought an orchid from smiths and it is pretty unique, the orchid is yellow with a pink red flare or edging on it with a red lip. This orchid reminds me of a dtps. minho princess phalaenopsis. If you could help tell me the genus or species name i will be quite obliged.

I don't think it's Minho Princess which is white and purple. It's unlikley to be a species but will be a hybrid of some sort (which have grex names instead of species names, Minho Princess is a grex name for example).

However it's also unlikely you will find exactly what grex it is because even if you find one that looks pretty similar it could be a different hybrid. What I can say for certain is that it's a Phalaenopsis genus orchid, or Phal for short. Don't worry about not knowing the name though as you can give it standard Phal care and it's just as pretty whether it's got a name or not. We affectionately call them NoID's here.

As a note Dtps stands for Doritanopsis which is in integeneric hybrid name, a hybrid of the genus Doritis and the genus Phalaenopsis. However there was only one species in the Doritis genus and it has now been merged with the Phalaenopsis genus. Therefore all Doritanopsis orchids have been reclassified as Phalaenopsis.

I agree with Rosie. There are soo many hybrids out there (especially with Phals) that look very very similar, if not identical, that there's no way to tell them apart. The culture advice for all of the hybrid Phals is all the same anyways. So, just be happy that it's beautiful, and grow it to the best of your ability!

Welcome to the OB!! (OB is short for Orchid Board ). And stick around here! With all the experts on this board, theres always something the rest of us can learn!

it looks as if its from Westerlay Orchids. I looked on their website - no IDs mentioned. You could e-mail them and ask them. It is from the Netherlands, maybe someone in Europe has seen this before...
