Excellent Mervin. Gigantea is a really neat species. You've given me a idea about the size needed for flowering. I've got a couple of them and excited to get them larger and flowering too.
Love that you have your Phals mounted and hanging like in nature. What are you using for the mounts? What size of mount do you find is best to accomodate them? Also noticed that your gigantea is potted? Does it seem to grow better that way. One I have is potted in NZ moss and another is hanging in a cedar basket, but also in moss. |
Thanks you all for your kind comments.
Dave - as for mounts, find the biggest one available, at least 30cm x 30cm would be ideal. I use fern bark slabs for all my mountings instead of cork slabs because of their water holding feature. Cork is way to dry for my liking. Now to potted, I only have one gigantea potted with moss and I would be mounting it up soon. It came like that so I left it as it is, didn't want to stress it so soon. Then came the spiking and flowering which only delayed the mounting. I am never comfortable with 100 % moss, I like watering my plants and this huge pot of moss can last anywhere from 5-8 days. This is after I made holes around the plastic pot. Giganteas are indeed awesome, even if they don't flower. Love those huge majestic leaves and cannot get enough of it ! Do post your pics of your gigs Dave, doesn't matter even if they are not in bloom. I've seen one in Taiwan with 14 huge leaves ! Good luck Dave. |
