Phal equestris 'Apari' pink?
Anyone knows what this one looks like? I'm in the process of adding one to my humongous order from my favourite vendor (I think I have to dub them that even though I haven't even gotten the Phals yet! ). There are no pictures of the flowers but it's by far the cheapest of all of their mature equestris plants (not that I'm complaining). I also tried to google for pictures but to no avail.

Mutant - this one was made by a friend using Apari and an alba. I would think that the alba lightened it up a bit.

Interesting, it almost looks like an equestris 'Orange', and since that variant is one of my absolute favourites, I really won't complain if it looks something like your friend's mix.

Thanks Judi! Always nice to have some equestris to drool over.
'Apari' is actually making me quite confused since there seems to be a lot of different versions of just 'Apari'. I ordered the 'Apari' pink and have already ordered an 'Apari'. Also, I have an 'Apari' "orange" here at home which I have no idea how it will look like. It's supposed to look like an "ordinary" 'Apari' (however that looks) but with an orange lip instead of whatever colour it usually has. I really look forward to what the flowers will look like. It has bloomed, but it doesn't seem like anyone thought about taking some photos of it then.

The trouble is that there seems to be quite a bit of confusion regarding equestris varieties. I think it's mainly due to the fact that there are several natural variations, but a lot of manmade ones made as well, and there's a bit of overlap between the 2....
Glen, that equestris is stunning! The shape looks more of the Ilocus type though, rather than Apari or the tipo.

Thanks Camille. If I understood your post correctly then 'Apari' has to do with the shape of the flower, and not the colour? So, did I get it? I really need to learn about what the different names refer to in an orchid name...

From what I understand (but may be wrong), Ilocos is an island in the Philippines, and you can have Ilocos types (rounder blooms) of all colors. Apari is apparently a river in the Philippines, and apparently the equestris in that area may be a bit different. I also read that Phal equestris 'Riverbend' originates from a population that is much larger (spikes as well) than most equestris. Basically the amount of variation in this species is enormous, there is overlap between names, and not everyone recognizes the same natural varieties. For instance I have one called semi-alba and the lip is a bit blue, so I suspect that it may be also known as something else....
Here's a good thread I found over on slippertalk that explains some things: Phal. Equestris and all its variations

Thank you Camille, you're great.
It's a very confusing species, or rather, the documentation about it is confusing. What is called equestris glenn, might be known as equestris hoola-baloo somewhere else... And also, the dividing lines between some variants seem rather arbitrary. I've, for example, come across pictures of equestris alba and equestris aurea that look the same... .
*runs off to read about equestris*

alba is totally white, aurea has a yellow lip. That much is certain about those 2. The danger of internet with such a confusing species is that there are likely tons of pics of mislabeled plants. So an additional difficulty in figuring out what is what....
