The purpose of the book is to cover the latest trends in phalaenopsis breeding. It's a good resource. It has one chapter on species where it describes each species and has one paragraph about what that species contributes to hybrids. I found it to be an interesting book and I think it would be an excellent resource for anyone interested in breeding.

thanks for this resource. I got 2 of his books from my local library, the one you referred to is not available so I might just have to buy it on Amazon! He is a great author. I can also recommend him.

yes, that site is a great resource. Its a pity that photos of the entire plant , with measurements, are not posted - but its still useful. He has photos of hybrids that are not generally available.

Here is an example of a description of what to expect an infloresence to look like from the Baker's portion of OrchidWiz.

INFLORESCENCE: Up to 14 on mature plants. The spikes are 12-18 in. (30-46 cm) long. Several new evergreen inflorescences are produced each year. The spikes are purplish, stiff, zigzag, and suberect. They may be simple or branching, and they continue to bloom for years.

It also talks about habitat, leaves, flowers etc.

I admit to being a little surprised at this thread. Nobody has mentioned the popular book, Phalaenopsis, A Monograph by Eric Christenson. The purpose (and result) of the book is exactly what the poster asked about.

Christenson (with funding from the International Phalaenopsis Alliance) has written a monograph to revise and update the taxonomy of the genus. This is the first and only definitive book on the subject since 1969. It's basically the bible of the genus.

A very interesting site, unforunately the species discription are mostly in Japanese.......

The rest of the site is in English and has great habitat info. I wish I could read Japanese for the rest of the individual plant descriptions. I'm sure they will update more of the species.

I have OrchidWiz Encyclopedia the more expensive version. Might be worth the extra $$ if you're considering hybridizing.
