Sup everybody? So on 7/12/11, I got to spend 7 hours at Orchids Ltd. shadowing Jason Fischer and learning about the business. It was a super fun time and now I know that orchids is going to be a career. We ate Japanese for lunch too! Deflasked some Phal and Dtps. hybrids and then transferred to cell trays. Culled some plants. Even got to do a Neofinetia cross. Hopefully, more opportunities to come...
Got some pods forming...
* P. bastianii x philippinensis ('Mindoro' x 'Mindanao') - Pollinated 4/16/11
* P. parishii x chibae ('KF' x sib) - Pollinated 6/21/11
Here is P. javanica. Did a cross today, hopefully it takes. P. javanica x taenialis.

WOOOOO! Another hybridizer! Make sure to keep a log of all the crosses you attempt, and include the pollination date, the parents, and room for the registered name (if it is a unmade cross), and the date of seed harvest.

For sure! I got a 3-ring binder dedicated for all my orchid info/notes. Every attempt I made was double-checked on phals.net to make sure they were unmade.
I couldn't get borneensis to take my pallens pollen because I was too far from the ovary. No hybrids have been made with borneensis either.

Yeah Jason is quite a character. Been building my merchandise stock recently. So far I got seedlings of sanderiana ('Joy' x 'South Olive' AM/AOS), javanica, mannii, speciosa var. tetraspis, and mariae that I will try to sell later on as I grow them out. Made my first unofficial sale yesterday, which was an inscriptiosinensis in-spike to Morgan Gonia, owner of Cosmic Aquatics in Superior, WI. He supplies my fish and corals in case any of you are into that. I may take his offer to do consignment in order to start off and he is willing to direct me to his web developer. Starting this career in orchids is going to make or break me.

WICKED! That is AWESOME that you are pursuing a career in orchids! I am also planning/in the process of 'starting' my orchid business, and I am starting by aligning pollen donors for my violacea Sumatra that is blooming soon. I am planning on looking into copy right info as I want to copy right a name for my 'company.' I also need to look into making a blog or something where I can make a list of what I will have for sale! The unfortunate thing is that I live in Canada, so unless you want to pay for photosanitary certificates and the whole works, I will be limited to buyers in Canada. Unless I sell seed pods, because I think that can pass the border unaffected.
