well, since i already resurrected this thread once, ill do it again.

Six months later and i have a new leaf coming and there are two beefy roots that have already escaped the (fake)hygrolon to seek out their fortunes.

Hey DC, what are you using for your fake hygrolon? I ordered some speaker/seat fabric from Amazon to use, I'm hoping it's close enough. They call it spacer mesh, so I'm thinking it's close to what I'm looking for.

So that is it. 3D air mesh or air layer fabric. You have to make sure you are not getting the polyester material. It does not wick. You want the nylon stuff

Ya know, I was just thinking about the yards of worthless fabric you have to recover an 80s conversion van. Wouldn't that stuff make a good "sail" somewhere in the yard or attached to house for shading orchids? Or a little lanai?

I'll have to see what I can find for nylon when I get a chance, too bad you had to go through the learning curve on that!

you know i will give that some thought....it is a better solution than wasting it BUT i have never thought of throwing it away (lol) so it really wont be wasted

it is not strong relative to wind...it is much stronger than burlap for wrapping a mount but i feel like even a folded and reinforced grommet would tear out easily...Also i have shade cloth and two 16' triangular Sunsails already.

It's a test use at this point so if it doesn't work it's not a major investment.

I never throw anything out either, you never know when you might need it!

So how is your Phalaenopsis gigantea doing now, DC? This is one of those species that I've always been tempted to try, even though its reputation for being somewhat difficult to grow and bloom has kept me from trying one out in my growing area. I have, however, much to my surprise, done very well with Phalaenopsis violacea and bellina over the last year--they survived their first winter in my distinctly non-tropical environment--so I might be working up the courage (or stupidity) to give gigantea a shot.

Do you know why your plant was initially struggling, and (more importantly) what you may have revised in your cultural regimen that's had a positive effect?
