This is one of the Phals that regularly drops its leaves. I'm too comfy in my bed to go grab my copy of the Christensen book, but if memory serves, P. deliciosa and most (if not all) if its close relatives are deciduous to some degree or another.

It's rare in Phals, but yes some Phal species do this.

There are other Orchid Genuses that do this more often, whole sections of the Den genus are deciduous, and Orchids like Cyprepedium are pretty much entirely deciduous.

A lot of phals can loose their leaves. I think about : Lobbii, lowii, taenialis, parishii, etc.. Mainly during their rest period in winter.(north hemisphere)

Yes, maybe rare was the wrong word, sorry my mistake

I guess what I meant to say is that among the standard phals and hybrids the vast majority (including all those mass market hybrids) don't have a rest period or loose more than one or two old leaves at a time and so that is what most people are used to with Phals. Generally we are used to Phals with no leaves being at deaths door.

However there are several species (and their close hybrids) which need a winter rest and can loose their leaves as part of their natural cycle.

This is a particularly pretty example of one.

Phalaenopsis taenialis Male
Default I just bought this from OrchidWeb

as the flower form is appealing....and its a species......and the primary cross with equestris is VERY appealing.
Seems to have a lot of primary breeding potential.
