Phal Scilleriana Root Keiki - Orchid Board

during my last vacation in our province of Bohol in the Philippines I was surprised to find Phal native specie growing Keiki's from the roots. I thought keiki's grow from spikes and stem only but this maybe a characteristics of scilleriana only.

There were several tiny keiki's actually all over the tree.

Those are probably seedlings. Nice photos.

You see this from Phal stuartiana also where keiki occur from roots. I posted these pictures in 2008, this keiki is much larger now.

And this picture is taken from a nursery in Taiwan. You see this more freely from large mature plants.

I myself was surprised because the keikis were all over the tree. I'm sure they are from the roots and not a seedling since the roots they are attached to I traced back to the mother plant. The owner gave me 12 keikis.

Now I'm going to mount my matured native phals on woods. They seem to produce keikis like crazy when on woods.

peterlin, the first phal is not a stuartiana or schilleriana since the leaves are not mottled.

I still have the first phalaenopsis - despite of its small size it has flowered before and it is in fact a Phal stuartiana. Culture, growing condition will affect the appearance of the leaves. This plant does produce paint mottled leaves. In the 3rd picture above, you can see mature phal stuartiana with variable shades of leaves.

Selective hybridizing has produced Phal stuartiana with green leaves.

That is amazing as hell.

Im trying to roll over in my head how exactly this is possible and why its specific to stuartiana/schilleriana. I suppose there are a good amount of vascular bundles in the roots which would provide the necessary meristematic tissue, but why would it determine to differentiate there? I would figure any auxins found there would be for more root production.
