Default Dor. pulcherrima var champorensis

Hello. I have very few phals, but I just picked up two of these. Can anyone confirm that I am writing the name correctly? The tag says Dor. champorensis.

Secondly, I am trying to figure out if I understand the whole naming thing. The tag says this exactly: Dor. champorensis ('kelly' x self). So does this mean that someone took a cultivar named 'kelly' and pollinated it with a regular pulcherrima? If not can someone please explain it to me?

Also, I got two of these because one is mostly pink with yellow in the lip and the other has yellow striped on the side of the petals and the edges are ruffled. Is this just a good example of the difference between seedlings or is it more probable that one is mislabeled? I will try to attach pictures next.

That first line was supposed to say very few phals. My phone auto corrected it. Still learning how to use it. Lol

Hi Jenn,

As far as I can tell Dor. pulcherrima var champorensis would have been correct... except that pulcherrima (the only species in the Doritis Genus) has been moved to the Phalaenopsis Genus.

The accepted name would therefore now be Phalaenopsis pulcherrima var champorensis. You can see confirmation of this genus change on the 'World Checlist of Selected Plant Species' on the Kew website. World Checklist of Selected Plant Families: Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

('kelly' x self) indicates that the 'kelly' cultivar has been crossed with another 'kelly' cultivar. This does NOT result in a 'kelly' because seed crosses even between two of the same cultivar can be genetically different to the parent.

I'm afraid I can't help on whether the variation is that normal to a seedling, pics might help others tell that for you.

P.S. I've also corrected the spelling in the first line of the post for you

Thank you. I think I get it now. I just took my first plant for AOS judging and they were debating the name so I want to be sure I have as much information as possible in case I have it judged in the future. I am going to see if I can upload these pictures to a website because I cannot upload them from my phone.

Thank you for all of your help!

Smile Dor. Pulcherrima

I too just received 2 of these today also. They look very healthy but since I'm still new to this hobby I looked it up. It is in the Phalanopsis family.
The tags on mine said "Doritas Pulcherrima var. Champorensis - pretty much same as yours.
From what I learned they can be terrestrial or epiphytic. I've decided to treat them as epiphytic and transplant them into semi-hydro - or maybe I'll plant one in semi-hydro and the other in Orchiata.

Wish me luck!
