Default Phal. mariae

This is this plant's first bloom...and even though it's only one bloom, it's really quite jaw-dropping. I'm not a huge Phal collector, but I really like this one! This picture is the stunning Phal. mariae, with a background filled with Epi. Mabel Kanda on the left, and Epi. Mabel Kanda x Epi. randianum on the right. They are lined up atop my TV.

Looks like bastianii to me although I admit I shouldn't be making such conclusions from a pic that isn't too clear.

Here is a picture that I posted elsewhere as mariae and got my head handed to me by some well known Phal specialists..

Mariae should have a hairy lip and neither yours nor mine do. Mariae should be more cupped than either plant and when you see pics of true mariae I think you will agree. Mariae has pendant inflorescences and yours appears to be upright, indicative of bastianii. Unfortunately true mariae is hard to find and bastianii is common. There are many hybrids of the two available. I'm not sure whether these were deliberate or made out of ignorance. Regardless the situation is pretty complicated.

For me it's not a mariae... bastianii or the hybrid between them, called Lovely Marie

Whatever the name - it's remarkable. Nice job. Pray tell, where did you come to acquire such an interesting phal? I love the shape of the flower and the vivid reds.

Well, at closer examination, this flower does have a hairy lip. The petals are not flat...the dorsal petal and sepals seem to have a slight cup towards the front, while the lower petals seem to cup slightly towards the back of the flower. It is definitely not flat. I'm no "Phal. expert", but by looking at pictures, it seems that the part of the lip that shoots upward (with the little yellow spots) seperates like a set of horns on bastiani, whereas the horns seem to curl towards eachother on mariae, creating sort of a circle. The horns on mine are definitely growing towards eachother, like mariae. I'll post some better pics later with a profile shot. I'm no expert, but these characteristics seem to be leaning more towards mariae than bastiani. I'm not trying to start an arguement here....just stating obvious features to me.

Nice one, Jasen. The markings look nice and dark.

Is the stem erect or pending ?

And mariae "should" flower during summer, not spring. And mariae generally have many flowers on one stem, while bastianii only has a few...

But it's always really hard to make the distinction between mariae, bastianii or the hybrid of both of them, which could be influenced more by mariae or more by bastianii...

If this link will work, there is a pic of mariae.

Phalaenopsis mariae 5 on Flickr - Photo Sharing!

bastianii has a few hairs on the lip. It isn't smooth. Mariae isn't a little cupped...it's really cupped.
