Sadie, I only have one north-facing window and the cat has a firm claim on it, so I never put anything in that window. Jewel-type orchids like Ludisia discolor might survive the winter in a north-facing window, but I think even they wouldn't be happy. But our winter doldrums are the price we pay for our beautiful green forests and gardens, so all we can do is work with what we have.
Evan..i also quite hate the cats...they destroy quite lot of my phals species spikes!! that day destroy phal. violacea's spike...this morning they destroy phal. tetraspis's spikes and phal. amboinensis var. flavida's spikes...all are wild cats...not my cats...oh my godness...

Alvin, that is terrible. I would be so hurt! After all the time and work you put into your orchids only to have them destroyed by feral cats!
Is there anyway you can make an enclosure for your orchids?

Alvin, I don't hate cats, but then again I only have one cat that is mine rather than a whole bunch of feral cats ransacking my orchids. I don't blame you for hating them. I would too!

I co-exist with my little hell-cat by working with her. I observe her habits and adjust my growing areas accordingly. If I have something that I really don't want her messing with I move it to another room and keep the door closed. Most importantly, I grow a pot of wheat grass for her to chew on instead of my plants.

Unfortunately, these methods wouldn't work for feral cats outdoors. Since you are in mourning over your last dog, I second Al's suggestion. Can you make an enclosure for your orchids? Kind of like my closed room, an enclosure would be the surest way of keeping the cats out of the chids.
