Knox Gelatin

While cleaning out my kitchen cupboards I came across a package of Knox Gelatin . Not sure how long it had been there . I was looking for the expiry date on it , and as I continued I started reading . It says that you can feed your plants a mixture of Knox Gelatin to perk them up to look healthier .

I don't know if this applies to all houseplants including orchids or just the leafy plants . It has a high nitrogen content , orchids need a high nitrogen fertilizer during the active growth season .

Has anyone ever tried this on any of their plants or is there any truth to it at all . Any info would be great reading . Thanks.

I haven't tried that mix yet, but Gelatine is basically Collagen from bone and skin. This being said it is not uncommon in general gardening to use such fertilizers as fish blood, guts and bones!

I can see no reason why it shouldn't work in principle. As for Orchids you may have to experiment with dosage (still learning. )

The claim is that Knox Gelatine is an excellent primary source of organic nitrogen.

Don't overdo it with nitrogen as it will impede blooming ...

I've mixed this up for the garden greens, its works - keeps things moist for a longer period of time. Although I don't bother with it anymore. It wasn't worth the trouble.

I don't think I would use this on any orchids, this stuff gets pretty mushy & kinda creepy after awhile.

Thanks for your comments on my question . If I do try it , it will be one plant and it will be in the spring .

If nitrogen impedes blooming , is it wise just to use a bloom booster and espom salts in the fall to aid in the developement of spikes ? With a water flush in between the fertilizers . Someone please enlighten me on this . Mine are just starting to spike but they are taking their time .
