Sorella comes to our orchid show in the spring. For some reason they rarely bring Phals. I have bought some other interersting things from them before. Does Sapphire Dragon have a website?

They came to our show in the spring and it was the same situation. I talked to Nerita and she said it is best to call about what Phals are available. When I purchased these plants it was the early 90's. Sorella was based in BC, Canada at the time and it was not a big deal to transport plants across the border.

Sapphire Dragon is at Welcome to Sapphire Dragon Orchids.

They're all so gorgeous! I especially like your pulchra, Susan. I've been seeing a lot of these online lately, but I like the unique hint of white mottling on yours.

I've also purchased a few things from Sorella, but that was at a show. How well do they pack plants for shipping? I've been drooling over their fasciata for over a year, but haven't made the plunge. I'm sure they do a good job, since they obviously love orchids, but I always like to hear someone's personal experience about a vendor. Thanks!

I was looking at that offer too! I had to grab a towel to mop up the drool. But since I had recently received 4 species phals, I ordered some cool-growing orchids (my first Masde, Miltoniopsis, and Neofinetia ) because I've been wanting to try them, too, and my temperatures are more appropriate for them than for phals (although it doesn't seem to slow them down too much!).

The plants I purchased from them were at a show, so don't have any direct experience with items shipped from Sorella. I'm sure they would be fine.

I wish you the best on the cool growers. I tried some "warmth tolerant" masdies years ago. They were fine until we got some 90 degree days, then they weren't so warmth tolerant .

Default Phal equestris question

Hi
I got a phal equestris and am wondering if I am caring for it correctly. I have some other smaller orchids which seem to do well in our sunny bathroom. Do they need to be cared for more intensely since the pot is so tiny? I worry about under-watering. I cut off the spike when it was done watering (gulp)...should have been on this forum first. We're just getting into the smaller orchids and we really like this one a lot. Any pointers would be appreciated.
thanks
tink

Hi Tink, welcome to OB!

I always leave old spikes on my species Phals. Many bloom from old spikes again like bellina, and violacea. Some like to make Keikis off an old spike. Most equestris are very prolific at making Keikis. I like to share with my friends so I leave them on. I've found equestris to be the MOST unfussy orchid I have. It pretty much blooms non-stop, and requires no special care.

Thanks for the welcome. Oops I guess it will take a while to rebloom now. I left the stem on the violacea I have but it sort of wilted when I had it home a while. I am new at this and wonder if I overwater. Thanks for the post I will keep plodding on
