Why are the new leaves on my P. bellina wavy? Male
Default Why are the new leaves on my P. bellina wavy?

When I received this bellina, all of the leaves were flat. However, the two new leaves it grew under my care so far look very wavy. My understanding is that wavy leaves are not unusual for Polychilos, but I still want to know what the nursery was doing different from me to cause this big difference in how the leaves look (eg, humidity, fertilizer, light, etc).

On a different note, it started growing a spike a few months ago, but shortly after it erupted, the spike stopped growing. Did it abort the spike or is it just taking a rest?

I would be curious if anyone could answer the question on wavy leaves. I would guess it is a combination of genetics and conditions. But your plant looks very happy, nice shiny new keaves!

In my experience, spikes start and stop on their own schedule. Usually they will start to grow again when the conditions are right and the plant is ready. In some cases they will sit forever and just dry up over time, but that’s only happened to me in immature or unhappy novelty phals.

Polychilos section Phals. can produce new leaves quite quickly. The waviness reflects irregular growing conditions as the leaf develops - water, temperature, humidity - causing zones of cells of different sizes to form. It's very hard to avoid in a Phal. on a windowsill.

That makes sense, since I like to rearrange my plants pretty often. Thanks!
