Default Phalaenopsis luddemanianna

I lost my Phalaenopsis luddemanianna this last winter. It was the Woodlawn variety. I had it for25 years and then it just died. I don’t know if this is allowed, but I am searching for a replacement. My original was given to me from my mom who past away this last October. If anyone knows where I can even get a Keki, please contact me. I am heart broken that I lost this plant.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Phal. lueddemanniana is often available from orchid vendors. If you go to the Vendor Feedback forum here, accessible from the left yellow menu via Forums, you can get some ideas of vendors to try.

Have you figured out what was the problem? This is a warm to hot growing plant. Many people's homes are quite cool for it in winter.

Wow, that must be a very difficult loss for you, after having the plant for so long! Wish you were in Europe because I have a large plant with many keikis (but not the Woodlawn type). Hopefully someone on the forum can help you. Have you tried contacting Big Leaf Orchids to see if maybe they have one hiding in the greenhouse somewhere? They have many other color forms of lueddemanniana now.

It is not an obligate warm/hot grower like bellina, violacea and the likes, and lueddes do very well in intermediate temps. Going down to 19-20C during the day in the winter and the occasional 16C at night has absolutely not been an issue for it. Would it perform even better if grown continuously warm/hot? Probably. But for many Phal species the temp range they will do well in is often far broader than their 'optimal' range.

If you don't mind sending me a plant of Phal Luddemania, I would be willing to pay for the plant and shipping. Plus if it gets confiscated in customs, it would just be my loss. I believe we can receive plants in bareroot form from Europe. Please let me know if it is possible.

Even bare-root, you need CITES documentation for a species, and phytosanitary certificate for anything. And likely, an import permit. A small undeclared package might slip through if your are lucky...but not legal. Much better to find a domestic source.

Brookside Orchids in the San Francisco Bay area has some Phal species (and good quality plants), might be worth an inquiry. Also, when I'm looking for any species I always think of Andy's Orchids... not on the website, doesn't have a lot of Phals, but the website is only a small fraction of the available species, he might have some, so worth the inquiry.

Do live near any orchid shows? Sometimes Taiwanese, Thai, and Malaysian vendors come with a very interesting selection of orchid species. Shows are starting up again, so that's a possibility.

Big Leaf Orchids has some Phal lueddemanniana
Phalaenopsis species – Big Leaf Orchids

Looking for a particular cultivar is probably an exercise in futility, since once a batch of mericlones is sold, it's gone. But looking specifically for the species should find you some. Do observe the spelling...if you're not finding any in your seach, that might be the reason.
