Our Phal schilleriana is opening its blooms and so far all flowers have spots on the petals. We saw the same on other schillerianas online, but not in all of them.
Do any of you have seen the same? Is it viral or some sort of mutation? We exclude pests mainly because there seems to be a pattern.
Can botrytis infection be other color than brown spots? I don't think it shows well in the photos but the spots in ours are the color of the petals just darker with a ring of a lighter hue around it.
I do not think this is normal. All schilleriana I've seen (and smelled!) that have some spotting have very small, regular "freckles" and not big spots like that.
I'd have to look closely to see how the texture changes around the spots, maybe through a magnifying glass or a jeweler's loupe.
Could it possibly be a color mutation? Could they just be echoes of the spotted lip appearing on other segments?
The halo around the dark spot makes me think a sucking insect got a few meals while the flower was in bud. Do the lower spots match up with where the other parts were overlapping when the flower was folded up as a bud?
