Flying to mainland Europe to get the plants is a nice idea. Some memorable times will come of that. I flew to Brisbane - also in our state of Queensland once, and brought back some orchids - such as some juvenile Oncidium Sharry Baby 'Ruby' (I guess they have to give it a name ----- as odd as it appears heheheh), and this one is still sort of juvenile and had been growing in scoria, and finally produced 1 flower spike! It may still take a while though, as it is currently a spike only. And hopefully progresses to budding and flowering stage!
Will be awesome to see what you bring back if you get some more orchids via a flight trip!

I understand you but I have many that do not bloom from pods of any size. The Rlc. Yen Corona Green does it both ways, small pod or no pod. The C. Volcano Clown, Lc. Mini song Petite, Lc. Mari's Song CTM 217 and many more do the same. These bloom two or more times a year but I have others that do it once this way, something that is not good because the pod protects the flowers.

Merita ----- do you mean that you have many flowering size cattleya type orchids that just don't produce flower spikes at all?
Regarding sheathless spiking ..... various catts always producing spikes without sheaths is not uncommon. For 'Sweet Afton' ------ I recall some details that I read in the past that it is always develops spikes in sheathless mode. So the pics here are only to indicate that sheathless spiking is definitely not 100% for 'Sweet Afton'.
Definitely fascinating in that various catts can produce spikes with either mode.

The flowers open fast. The second flower opened now as well.
I'm currently getting a message about quota being exceeded by 146 kb or so. So currently cannot attach images in the usual orchidboard way. But - that's ok! I can always link the images from google drive.

The images below comes from my own member-upload area ----- an alternative upload method, as I currently can't upload images using the usual 'attachments' approach - due to some 'exceeded by 146 kb' limit.
