I am not extremely familiar with plant genetics, but you need to at least stay within the same genera in most cases- oncidiums with oncidiums, phalaenopsis with phalaenopsis, and dendrobium with dendrobium.

Well, actually, Dendrobium and Phalaenopsis are different genus in the same family, Orchidaceae
Cat and rabbit are in different family, so it's a bit different (this, only to be pernickety
)
Cat are in the same family with Lynx, Jaguar, Lions, Tiger and Leopard, and we know that in this family it's possible to hybrid only the most similar species (like tiger with lion, who are in the same genus: Panthera)
So, it's clear that it's more easy to hybrid two species if they are in the same genus
Sometimes inter-generic cross are possible, but effectively Phalaenopsis and Dendrobium are not only different genus, but they're also in different tribes, so I approve that it's very difficoult to cross them

before Trollsvans told me that it's impossible to cross them, I've alredy do it!
I've pollinate a NoID Phal with the Dendrobium phalaenopsis pollen, and now the Phalaenopsis flower is withering like when an orchid flower got pollinated
NOW
I know that probably the flower won't produce a pod, and it will fall off soon
or
it will start to pruduce a pod, but after a time, the pod will die
or
the pod will ripen, but the seeds won't be fecund
BUT
I'll update you, who knows how it will end
