Yes aerial roots can form between the leaves. You'll see the white sheathing on a root. A spike had an end that look a little bit like a mitten. Sometimes you just have to wait and see

It's hard to tell... it's growing pointed upward, though... not familiar enough with roots to know if that's just the leaf pushing it that way.
