Some paphs, especially maudiae crosses, are prone to that when they dont get enough light. if you want, you can repot the paphs so the root nubbin' are buried under the media so they can develop into roots. grow them in more light and you probably won't have the same problem again. good luck

True, especially if both of them are doing this. Paphs don't grow arial roots, so any roots that start developing outside of the potting medium will just dry up and turn into the nubbins you are seeing.
