I think there needs to be some balance in the process. While I agree that ideally composition, lighting, focus etc. should be as close to perfect as we can get it you also have to keep in mind the subject matter. I don't care how well composed and perfect the photo is if it's of a boring/common subject then it really doesn't speak to me. That's why I liked Mauros picture. The plant was unique...amost weird, but it got my attention. That's also probably why I don't buy calendars with perfect pictures of cute fluffy kittens.

I liked the creativity many showed just in their choice of plant.
