Thanks very much Al & Sue! I like this combo too - so now its on to the tweaking part....
The spikes look like little 'crab claws' to me - and as far as I can tell, so do the new growths when they first emerge! I have to wait until I see what emerges between the two 'claws' before I can tell whether its going to be a spike or a growth. The only other indication is the position on the plant... if its coming from the third leaf down from the top, its more than likely to be a spike. Any lower than that and the odds are it will be a new growth.
