As an owner of one of these from Orchids Limited, who are experts in Japanese orchids, I would really like these to be called Sedirea, as on my label, but the RHS website, who I think are the final keepers of the keys, list Phal as the primary name and Sedirea (and one other) as accepted synonyms. That makes it OK for us to call these Sedirea, but we know in our hearts they are Phal.

Your Sedirea (Phalaenopsis) japonica is a lovely plant! Very healthy and grown well. Congratulations.
This is one of the easier Phalaenopsis I have grown, small in size and actually tolerates cooler temperatures in the winter, than their southern cousins. I have not seen any hybrids where this plant is crossed with a plant species from the Philippines, or other places south. From what I read, the possibility is there, hence why this is in the Phalaenopsis family?

RHS is the owner of the keys for hybrids, not species. They follow the Kew communications and on this, are still following the Phalanenopsis moment 2 years ago. But the checklist maintained by Mr Govaerts is a collaborative work peer reviewed and so the first level of consensus outside the mad geneticians and the evil botanists (and the diabolic taxonomists) alone is the Checklist.
The RHS issued a mail explaining some taxonomic changes 2 years ago, but on the scientific side the consensus is not reached. We're talking science here, not hybridation. As DNA talked so far, it may end Phalaenopsis, but the affair seems to be more difficult than thought in 2013 so maybe some are arguing on the markers used…

For hybrid registration purposes it is considered Phalaenopsis, so cross it with a Phal and you have a Phal, even though Sedirea is generally accepted scientifically for the time being. It is important to remember that RHS makes definitive decisions for naming of hybrids, but no one does that for genera and species. Scientists may reach a long term (though always provisional) consensus eventually. If RHS had chosen to wait and see for a while before jumping in and changing things there would be a little less confusion.
There are registered hybrids of this species involving at least the following genera: Holcoglossum, Luisia, Phalaenopsis, Papilionanthe, Rhynchostylis, Sarcochilus, Vanda and Vandopsis (or Hygrochilus)... and Neofinetia if you prefer to consider that separately from Vanda. So it can probably be crossed with the whole range of Phal and Vanda relatives. At least 26 total hybrid progeny.
This one is a very nice, well grown representative of the species. There are awards for plants with 7 spikes and 50+ and 60+ total flowers and buds on specimen plants, so just think what a few more years of good culture can bring.
