One tip would be to always sieve bark befoe use. Whatever size you want, use a sieve that will get rid of anything much smaller so as to keep the air spaces open.
Bark that is open, shallow and dries out between waterings will hardly break down at all.

Ok I will do this, do you have any other advice for re potting before I take the plunge? I'm probably unnecessarily nervous about it, but the more advice the better

Being outside the UK I don't get anything there, but did get some nice Neofinetia falcata from him during their imported plants sale in September.
If you got that Den in a supermarket/garden center, then it's very likely to be Den kingianum hybrid, Den Berry 'Oda'. The majority of this mass marketed type of Den in western Europe is that hybrid, based on discussions I had in the past with people that have spoke with suppliers. Both of mine were labeled as such as well when I bought them. The advantage of this hybrid (if it's really that) is that it's more forgiving than the species, and can be easier to get into bloom.

Ah ok, interesting, I don't have a picture of it in flower sadly but it was purchased in a garden centre, they have a huge selection of orchids but this was just labelled as dendrobium. I will certainly keep that website in mind for, the future, thanks

Well I survived, time will tell for the plant, those roots were packed tight but I did what I could without damage. Now I look at the pot it came in and wondered how it fit. A pro huh?

Lot easier than you thought, eh?
I am amazed that you can buy 4 inch deep pots.

Yes it was pretty easy, a lot of the roots were firmly stuck but there's nothing else I could do.
I'm amazed I guessed the pots were the recommended size by eye. Ha. The pot was almost £3 so I wouldn't like to need to buy a lot of them.

An update, the plant seems to be doing ok, lots of new roots! And over all looks pretty good considering what it has been through. Now is this a flower stalk or something else? It appears to have a root?!?!
