Welcome Boxter What do you have those phals planted in? It looks from the pic to be a very fine mix of something.

Same here. I have a couple of phals that have taken a long time to have their new leaves unfurl. They'd look like a solid sword or something. And and then after a few weeks, they'd open as a regular leaf would.
They are planted in Lechuza (German planter company owned by Playmobil) Pon. It’s an interesting medium that drains quickly and retains moisture at the same time. I’ve found that my Phals love it. Just repotted an oncidium in it to see how it fares as well.
