Pot size for those who won't fit in a quart

Hello all,

I have moved several phals, a few phrags and a few paphs, and oncidiums to semi hydro at this point. However I am having an issue with pot size. What I see most frequently mentioned is deli type quart containers. Some of my orchids won't fit in a quart with the space required for a reservoir at the bottom.

I got some cheap pitchers. My concern is that these might be too tall for wicking to work? The only other options I see are to go from a vertical quart to more of a tub container (which seems too much space) or to stick to a quart with holes on the bottom and in a saucer of water as the reservoir.

What do others do when a quart isn't enough? I did search other sizes and at supply stores it seems to leap from 32 oz to 60 oz with little in between.

Also, do others go smaller than a quart, for really small orchids?

As an aside, I also moved 3 succulents, one promptly died, and I'm plotting to move 2 to 4 ferns next. I have what I think is a baby staghorn type fern which isn't happy in its pot. The african violet that I moved is hanging in.

I have gotten cheap storage containers at the Dollar Store or gallon-sized juice containers with an appropriate shape from a grocery. For the juice containers, I cut them down so they aren't too tall.



Over-potting is not a problem with semi-hydro, so you don't need to worry about the "tub container". Actually, I find the deli quart size to be rather more tall than I like anyway.

Look in bathroom supplies area for a small plastic trash can. They work well.
