Am I correct that you cannot really overpot when converting to S/H? Currently I have a Phal in an extremely cramped ~3 inch plastic container. There is hardly any moss left and the roots are distorting the plastic. I would like to convert to S/H and found a great container but it is about 6 inch high and 5.5 inches wide.

If this were a regular houseplant in soil, I wouldn't move up more than an inch or so at a time but I think I am understanding that the usual rules don't apply to S/H.

I imagine Ray will chime in here, but you are correct. You will probably lose some of that big ball of roots when you move the plant to S.H, but the new roots will be acclimated to the new situation and the size of the container will not be a problem, as long as the depth will still allow the wicking you need.

I just noticed there is already a thread with this exact question being answered. Oops.
