Now that really does sound interesting. Does it work? I guess I must be a little boringly self-restrained not to do some such adventurous experimentation mysef.

This is the basic formula I use with some "tweaking" and
it's the only thing I use besides rainwater. Does it work?
ABSOLUTELY!!!!!

Wow Ray! im surprised you are so quick to down trodden other peoples things. well wait till i get my digitial camera i,ll show you the picture of my tiny tot Restripia. It was growing normaly with ok results. I Started using this concotion as you call it! With in 4 weeks I have had 7 new Growths on my restipia, plants that did not bloom before are now blooming. And as far as the epsom salt....I have to say your wrong. Epsom salt main ingredient is magnesium wich is one of the a major factor,s as for growth and flowering needs of plants. Not only do I use it for my orchids. I also add 1/2 tsp everythree weeks to my Coral reef fish tank! I am self taught in everything I do....No collge degree here..But I do wish I had the expanded vocabulary that you have...

Oh and the proper mixture for this Recipce is as follow,s.
1- can of beer
1- cup epsom salt
1/2 cup ammonia
2-cups water
mix extremely well. then I add this to 1 gallon of water. I use 1/2 ounce weight to 1 gallon of water every two weeks. My grandmother loved usingthis stuff! But people please use this at your own risk! Experiment with one or two plants that are doing so -so - then leave a post to let me know what ya think

Clay, what Ray said was that he didn't recommend this mix for the s/h regimen.
I have (almost) all my plants in aliflor and clear pots, but they are pots with drainage at the bottom, so it is not the S/H regimen. Most of them sit above the drainage/humidity trays but a large number of them sit on rocks in the trays and that water does rise occasionally to where the plants are "sitting" in water.
Anybody who has seen the growth going on in my little corner of the world wants to know what I'm doing back there...the "secret" is this recipe with a few drops of SuperThrive added to the mixture once it's gone into the gallon of water.

Interesting Thread, I really like S/H method, and I should really get around to trying Sue's beer fert. I just gotta get the beer first. Thats right SUe, I haven't bought a beer since you told me about this, and then some more time before that.
Anyway, I have recently heard that people are growing African Violets in S/H. That could be the answer to my AV problems. I was also wondering if S/H would work on Anthuriums?

Hello, I love to experiment! Every time I get a orchid that I think can be divided such as mas. epi. paphs, etc, I do so right away, that way you can try different things. At least you will have more then one plant to experiment on. I bought a nepenthes glabrata pitcher plant, wich is carnivorous. This species is touted to have the smallest pitchers of them all. The plant cost me $50. I went to a hydro shop up here bought rock wool cubes and cut 2 cuttings and used root tone for cutitngs. Well now I have 3 $50 dollar plants. Dont be arfraid to make more plants via division,s.

AHHHH!!!! Super thrive...darn why didnt I mix that with it too. I see he would,nt reccommend it with s/h culture. I got a few orchids in s/h culture for the past 2 years.. when I have to feed I just pull up the whole plant give a few sprays to the roots and leaves. I dont add it directly to the water mixture resevior.
sorry for the bad spelling. Hey who ever runs this fourm. Is there any way to get a spell check for those of us that are not to good at grammer. lol

I use the rain water formula from First Rays.
It looks like the beer formula would be lacking in the trace minerals . Gin

Clay, if you're really worried about spelling (I'm not) then try typing your message in a Word program, use that speller then cut and paste over to here. Just a thought.
