Rotting Roots & Mold in S/H
Default Rotting Roots & Mold in S/H

Hi everyone! I have been growing Phals in bark for over a year, but have recently taken an interest in the semi-hydroponic method. Last week, I transferred my first Phal into S/H. I am aware from my research that the old roots will likely begin to rot as they are not adapted to this growing environment; however, I have yet to find anything that explains what to do about these rotting roots. Will simply flushing the pot regularly remove the decaying roots or do they need to be removed some other way? It seems that some of the roots on the plant that I transferred into S/H last week are already beginning to decompose, and I think I see some early signs of mold starting to grow on the affected roots. How do I prevent the mold from getting out of hand? Thanks in advance!

When you water, it is important to flood the pot, as that will flush away the decomposition products.

The fungus is actually helping that process, and will only attack the dying tissue; healthy tissue will be unaffected. Don't worry about it.
