Ray, they didn't have any roots left. I was pouring hydrogen peroxide on the rot area - it fizzed up - and then once it was dry I dusted with cinnamon and then stuck it back in it's pot and then back in a plastic bag with a wet paper towel. I put it inside a pot so it didn't touch the sides of the bag. No matter what I did, the rot apparently never stopped. I was treating with the peroxide every 1 to 2 days. It's as though it was rotting from the inside out so the peroxide was not completely getting to all of the rot.

I just spke to Tom Whitehead (Whitehall?), one of the owners of Maril Products, and he claimed there is a typo on the label, as Physan is intended for use as a topical treatment for rots of all kind.

OK, so he is saying I am OK spraying Physan 20 on surfaces displaying rot? And is there a recommended dosage?

Yes, and the recommended rates are at Physan.com, under the "Orchid Instructions" link.

Looking there just now, I think I see where the label issue came from:

Part of the instruction says:
Quote:
Orchids - Adult Plants
Spray anytime disease other than rot (see below) is evident. Spray once per month as preventive maintenance. Soak compost when fungus is evident.

USE: 2 teaspoons PHYSAN 20 per gallon of water.
...and the "see below" part gives instructions for specific kinds of rot.

I'll bet that whoever put together the bottle label, figuring the label didn't have room for all of the others, simply took out the "(see below)".

I have used Thiomyl with good success for my semi-hydro mistakes, i.e. putting already dead slightly decomposing roots into semi-hydro and then not using physan... Thiomyl is a wonder, but I believe it could also pose a problem for smaller plants.

Physan is great small problems, but Thiomyl is the way to go for all out rot.

I suspect that cinnamon bark doesn't have enough surface area to adequately leach the cinnamaldehyde into the water. I have a couple of alternatives in the "fungicide" section here:
