Want to try s/h

Hi

I would like to start growing some orchids in s/h.
The only thing im not sure about it that root hormone that people talk about. Will a plant do fine in semi- hydro with just regualr ferlilizer? Also, if I try Cattleyas in s/h, should the resevoir be smaller, or do you still keep the resevoir about 1" deep?
