I burned the hydroton!
I was boiling some hydroton to reuse then got distracted. I fricking remembered about it when I smelled something BURNING. So I quickly poured water in the pot with the hydroton, which sizzled and placed it outside.
Is this batch done for? If it is, do I just dispose it like trash or do I put it in with the lawn cuttings?

I doubt you heated it hotter than it was fired at the factory. I would use it.
After a couple of incidents I'm considering cooking on a portable burner plugged into an appliance timer. I walk away from the kitchen to the orchids and get distracted until smoke gets in my eyes.

Direct effect on the hydroton - absolutely nothing.
You may have carbonized some residual organics. Charcoal never hurt anything.
Mineral salts from use or from the water may be more resistant to leaching now. Probably not an issue, but do give it a good soak in clean water before use.

I usually set a timer to check on anything I have on the stove top.

I tried that. I can't hear it outside the kitchen. My phone can be used as a timer but somebody sets it down here and there where I can't hear it. Maybe I do need somebody constantly telling me what to do.

You needs timer like people in labs use, the ones I used were small and could be easily clipped on to a pocket.

Truly I wish they invented a stove/range timer that actually shut it off after your time is up. So many times I have not heard the buzzer, and have forgotten the boiled eggs or whatever I had on. Then you smell smoke... panic...find a big mess, whatever. Not my kind of day.
