Plastic pot sources

Hi All,

Does anyone know a good online source for clear or milky-finish pots in sized suitable for s/h orchids? I'm looking for both taller than wide, and wider than tall. I know I can use food containers, but many are products I don't normally use. I already use deli containers, Chinese soup takeout containers, and clear Solo cups.

Milky finish would be helpful to keep algae growth down.

Hmmm, they all have bottom holes for drainage. No bueno.

Just trying to think ahead to repotting time next Spring, as some of my purchased plants...and some of my Catts currently attempting to spill out of the current s/h pot...are already too big for "Chinese soup container" but finding a container that's not too big (allowing for only 1-2 years growth) is stumping me.

I have found suitable plastic containers at the dollar store, storage containers, vases, and the like. I don't drink much juice or pre-made tea from the grocery, but those containers can be good also, and I have used "freecycle" in my area to get them before they hit the recycling bin.

Have you seen the large ones at Olive bars? I can think of 2 stores - Cermaks and Garden Fresh that have xlarge round plastic containers. You might get a couple free.....

If I'm not mistaken, you can ignore the 1-2 yr rule when doing s/h. No worries over medium breaking down and/or the center of the pot staying too wet.

Ellen, I'm no expert, but my understanding is that it's Fine to overpot in s/h. But if you mean that you're having trouble finding Big enough pots...

Check out Tom's site The Orchid House. He was a student of Ray's and has quite a few sizes of s/h pots (already with holes; even decorative ones if you want to go totally opaque). He also has other s/h supplies like what was originally marketed as PrimeAgra.

Just as an aside, I just placed an order there today and Tom answered himself! Really nice and helpful and ordering process easy peasy.

Try restaurant/catering supply stores. They have bigger plastic containers (think big vats of potato salad).

Nope, I didn't think about that either. Great idea! (I'll be in Chicago in a couple weeks, btw )

I think I may have read this months ago when first starting out, and completely forgot. Thanks for the reminder, it will make repotting much easier.

Just visited Tom's site, that was helpful. Shopping time! (I met Tom at an orchid show in Richmond back in March, he was patient and helpful with all my questions). Someone from a TX orchid society also posted a YouTube of a talk he gave to their group on s/h technique...search his name and you'll find it.

Ellen, yes I saw Tom's video...only I didn't connect it with the "Tom of The Orchid House" til just recently!

It's very good and inspiring for trying s/h.
