You'll probably do fine with the locally-sourced stuff.

Yea, but I'll have to spend a few hours separating the large unruly looking leca clumps.

I like to keep the leca balls more or less uniform in size and shape. Wouldn't that help with wicking?

Just to chime in, I buy my leca on Amazon. I usually go with the cheapest, which is the Grow!t brand, typically, though sometimes Hydroton is cheap (as a side, I would recommend only buying if it's sold by Hydroton and/or Amazon... I tried to splurge and get the good stuff and the seller just sent me a bag of the cheap stuff and I was not pleased). The closest hydro store to me is about a 45min drive which I don't have time for and I'm not sure how much better the price would be, if at all. I also have prime, which makes getting it at my door even more appealing.
Like the others, I use plastic food containers. I can get the deli ones pretty cheap off eBay, but you may be able to find them around locally as well and have also gotten some things from the dollar store.

I like unruly clumps, they don't roll away!

I have gone really cheap. I use empty juice bottles I cut the tops off and drill a home. It works great and they are all Clear. I have a few plastic cups for small plants. Reuse your trash it is a win win.

Ray, why have you stopped selling PrimeAgra? I like it the best.
Cheers.

Jim,
In PA, I had 2000 square feet of storage space at home, local warehousing a short drive away, and a great relationship with an organization that provided jobs for the developmentally disabled, who repackaged the PrimeAgra for me.
We relocated to a much smaller home in a much smaller community at the beach in NC, where there are no such facilities or organizations nearby. First Rays now occupies 50 square feet.
I had actually considered shutting down altogether, but KelpMax and Inocucor Garden Solution are such good products, that I just wasn't comfortable allowing them to no longer be available.
Besides spending time at the beach, we are planning to purchase a boat, and spend a lot more time cruising and fishing.
