Why not? Let the canes hang down from the containers?

An upright container. The canes grow over the edge, then down.

I tried, but the weight pulls it over and the water spills out. It ends up kinda sideways.

Use a heavy cache pot/vase as your reservoir.

Make a mini waterfall/fountain and pump the water back from the bottom to the base of the container!! The stream of water would only be as strong as whats pumped back up.
So crazy, it might even work!
