My first attempt at S/H Oncid Male
Default My first attempt at S/H Oncid

2014 was a year of experimenting with new ideas, after reading many failed attempts from many members , i can happily say a few handfuls of cley pellets , new roots were emerging at the time and i remmembered many saying , this is the right time to switch it out of moss , i used a container with 4 sides , drilled holes 1 inch up equally on each side , 4 holes total , i would water enough each week and monitored new growths carefully , under cfl lighting at 12 hour intervals , after 6 mnths. I have 2 new spikes emerging and it looks healthy. The only problem with one of the spikes , is that the sheath seemed to tight and the spike has a rather sharp bend at the base, hopfully it will be ok .

Steve- it looks very healthy, congrats! I have a Brassidium spike that did the exact same thing this year, and after a major U-turn it did fine

Looks great! Nice and plump. I just switched mine and it's shriveling up real quick. Maybe I didn't time it right. Oh well, leaves more space for new orchids if it goes! What's the species/cultivar?

It's pretty awesome. How do you keep the pbs plumped so well. Mine dehydrated a bit after being extremely pot bond in promix. But happily spiked for me once I repot it into bark, charcoal, perlite and clay pellets. I didn't do the 1 inch holes I have it in clay pot over a water reservoir.

Ashley,

Keeping the pseudobulbs plump is a matter of ensuring that the uptake of water is able to keep up with the losses due to transpiration, which is pretty substantial in a plant with such large leaf area.

If you're losing that battle, it suggests that the root system isn't adequate (unless you're simply underwatering).

Here is the final project , happy and blooming . This plant gets a trip to the sink twice a week , with a weakly weekly dose of fert.
