New to SH and from South Africa

Hello everyone,

I have been reading some of the threads in the SH discussion. I've always had my Phals in moss/bark, but am wondering in growing them in SH would not be better and a lot less messy.

I've always been carefull not to overwater, but tend to water more, and growing in SH would allow me to water more frequently without worrying about overwatering.

Does anyone know how I could get hold of a suitable medium in SA?

Hello and welcome! I prefer using inorganic potting medium but I haven't tried S/H. Good luck!

I like S/H a lot! It is less messy in my experience and you can sterilize and reuse the media.

I hope another South African can help you source a supplier! LECA is awesome!

Did you find anything per chance? Even finding clear pots here is a nightmare!!

Clear pots are not essential. Once your plants are well-established, you can water as frequently as you want, without fear of overwatering.

I can't comment on S/H, but as to clear pots - what I do is go to those plastic shops (plastilon, plasticland etc.), buy either see-through cups (for small plants) or other containers and drill holes in them. I also use plastic beer glasses from cricket, old mayo containers, anything that works

Look for LECA (Light Expanded Clay Aggregate) for hydroponics. There are many brand names but LECA is the generic acronym.
