That is great!
I know many people have great success with s/h and many don't.
I am not either for or against it. Whatever works the best for people.

Ii find that my version of it is very good for re-growing roots. It is almost like growing an avacado plant from seed. I use a lot of lava rock to suspend the plant over the water, just barely touching. As the roots grow, I take out rocks and lessen the water. I think of it more as a radical form of sphag and bag. I've got five nice, thriving catleyas from this method. I have never used hydroponic solution. It could be a good idea to research this.

Mine look the same way, and I have about 75 orchids in LECA. Have about 5 or 6 more to put into LECA. I use clear plastic containers, & punch holes in the sides & bottom. I've been using LECA for over three or four yrs. and would never go back to bark. Just my personal opinion...BettyE.

BettyE, I can't imagine 75 orchids, but two+ years ago with one grocery store Phal, I couldn't imagine the 38 that I have now! You must have free time to water more often if you also poke a hole in the bottom of the container. Have you tried just the sides for a s/Hydro setup?

No, Marc, but I grow in a greenhouse, and during the Summer, I water once a week. Of course, I do have a mister going during the heat of the day. ( I live in Texas )And, YES, I'm going to try the two or three holes at the bottom of the pot. Is one or two inches above the bottom correct? Thanks, BettyE.

I'm with NYorchidguy... and Ray. It depends on one's environment, micro if you will, and how much/little one wants to do on a daily/weekly basis.
In my humble opinion, there is not a great answer to any growing condition for orchids. And I'm pretty darned new at this. What matters is putting the right plant, in the right place, with the amount of care one cares to give on a long-term basis. The rest of it is just wishes and fishes.

S/H works for me. I have no issues with it. I grow some of my Vanda specie in this method and yet some of the other members cant.
The trick is to really flush the debris out of the container and religiously maintain cleanliness. Bacteria and fungi infestations may occur especially if the algae builds up. I am not bothered by algae as long as it doesn't harbor bacteria and fungi with it. But I flush them out thoroughly if ever I see that they accumulate dangerously.

I flush once a week, pour off the water then fertilize weakly.

An editorial comment here: Asking "what are the pros and cons of S/H?" is like asking "what are the pros and cons of asparagus?". There are situations where it is totally appropriate, some that are totally inappropriate (dessert?), and others that are in-between.
