Mine have a rheostat built into them so that's where my question is coming from. I know the hydroponic stores all sell thermostats to control the ones they sell too.
I think it would depent on what kind of orchids u have. But I'm really really new to s/h. Sorry I wish I knew more. Cuz I want to buy a few for the winter months since I have my thermostat on my heating unit set at 68° F. Sorry.

Do you know what temp your mat gets to?
All the package ever said was 10-20 (F) degrees warmer.
The point with seedlings is to start them at lower light and higher temperatures. I would consider 68-70 to be adult Catt temperature, so mat should probably be set for 75-80F (and seedlings watered accordingly, so they do not dry out).
In this situation I am using it in conjuction with the S/H method for newly repotted plants to help with their adaptation to the S/H media and in general to encourage new root growth. I will try to aim for ~10 degrees higher than ambiant.
