Hi everyone
One of my Cymbidium Sinense I got from Matt has 3 new growths. This is the picture I take after I pot it in s/h.
Should I cover all their root ? I worry if I grow it too deep the keikei will rot.Thank you!
I think it's just fine as it is. Keep the humidity up and if possible provide bottom heat. With new growths beginning, new roots will emerge very soon.
Actually, to me, it looks like you have the LECA mounded up around the base of the plant. It is better to have the top surface level so that you get uniform wicking top-to-bottom and center-to-perimeter. With watering it will get that way anyway, but will then expose the roots.
As far as depth is concerned, it looks fine.
many years ago, I imported about 500 "Chinese" cymbidiums a month, and they all went straight into semi-hydroponics. I never lost a single one.
Never saw a Cymbidium in S/H. Can you update on how it's doing?
The Keikei stop growing.
I un pot it on Tuesday because it's roots were rotten and grown mold on them. About 70% roots lost. right now I pot it in limestone mix with fine bark.
I also have another Cymbidium Sinense in s/h. But doing fine and I see there is a little thing cracking out from an old growth.
Ah. Was the original plant growing new roots at the time? Just curious. I have two goeringii in sh. Both introduced probably before they should have but in treated them with kelp max and got new roots right away. They're doing great now.
No new roots at the time I got them in s/h, only had 3 keikei.
How do you handle the goeringii when winter is very cold and they need very cold to flower but will the root be freezing in s/h?
I have 2 goeringii in s/h but just dying
I keep them outside until the first frost. They can handle some pretty cold temps. The sh keeps them cool too. When I have to bring them inside I out them in a colder window facing south. I'm certain they warm up during the day but they'll get down to cold but not freezing temps again at night. At the new year I put them under grow lights where it is warm and humid in my grow tent and the spikes begin to grow again from their dormant state. Seems to work but I've only done it one season.
Sh is perfect for these things really. They like the moisture and the evaporation keeps them cooler. Just don't let them freeze. If the plant is established in the sh with new root growth you needn't to worry about the roots getting too cool just keep them from freezing. And if that makes you uncomfortable remember that they don't need THAT cold of temps...they can just handle it without ill effect. Also, I've noticed it's the temp swing that seems to matter. Warm days but cold nights seems to do well by these plants.
