This orchid came in bark, in a terracotta pot (with the drain hole in the bottom chipped to a much larger size, interestingly)

When I got it home and dumped out the bark, I found the plant firmly gripping onto the pot itself with its roots-- but most of the roots looked pretty nasty and brown!

I just set the empty pot down in a saucer of shallow water, and poked at it a little every few days to check the roots. Eventually they let go of the pot, and I was able to trim the worst roots and transfer the plant to S/H.

A month later, here's pic #2. All the store blooms have dropped off, but the growing tips on the active roots have doubled in size, and the roots appear to be almost entirely green!

Now if I could just find some better pots like this clear one...

That looks good. I make my own pots by putting holes in plastic containers. You can use a soldering iron or a nail heated over a candle

I grow mine in clay pots. But if you prefer the clear plastic, check ebay.

I'm looking for some plastic containers to put holes in. This clear container notion seems VERY helpful, especially for a newbie like me.

I'm still surprised about those roots. In pic #1 it looks almost diseased or something. I still am not sure how to identify which roots can recover and which ones can't.

I find really nice acrylic containers in second hand stores or dollar stores. I even have a few plastic crystal vases that I have put a good sized hole in, a little over an inch from the bottom to form the reservoir. They look nice. Or plastic food canisters for large orchids.
