Camille;

You really need to try them again. Lots of water and lots of fertiliser in the summer is the trick.

Right now, 'Bolero' is my pride and joy. I have a 30 year old 'Apple Blossom' I got when I worked in the greenhouses at university. I had to divide it and give most away because it just got to be to big and heavy. The parent it came from was in a clay 60 gallon pot. Back then no one knew how long it was in the collection.

Cheers.
Jim

Jim excellent clister! I have one that looks much the same except it's papilio (species) or butterfly amaryllis. My collection is up to about 50 named hybrids. I love them!

As for your Apple blossom, is there any chance I could score an offset!?!? The Apple blossom they sell now is NOT a good one and not the apple blossom it's supposed to be. Mine was destroyed in a storm and I have never found a replacement. I'll pay for the bulb and shipping. Let me know!

Btw hippeastrum LOvE sh. They bloom multiple times a year for me in it.

One of my favorites from Australia, "Party Pooper".

And Tosca,

OK, now I really really want to give these a try again! I think I'll go buy a bulb on monday. How do you start them in S/H? Just plop the bulb on top of the leca?

Exactly. Give bottom heat if possible and let the pot go pretty dry after soaking the basal plate of the bulb overnight. It'll want to bloom and everything before it roots, so secure it in the pot. Once it is done blooming it'll push leaves and around that time it'll push roots. When the leaves are a few inches long, you can give the bulb more water and a slight tug will reveal its grown roots.

The bulb may lose a lot of mass during this time. It'll recover fine.

And Tosca,

Ryan;

I have papilio as well. My wife really likes that one, as well as my 'Picotee'. Two years ago I scored a reticulatum var. striatifolium. It hasn't bloomed for me yet.

No problem with the Apple Blossom. I've had some bad luck shipping in the winter and it's consistently below freezing here now so I can put a marker on my calendar to make a trade in the spring if you're okay with that.

Cheers.
Jim

Jim that works fine and lucky you on the reticu!! Ive stopped collecting these bulbs unless I find a rare one I want. Striatum is on the list still! I have an heirloom species but can't remember the name just now. I'll find out and post a pic, perhaps you'll want one. It's a wildly stripped species and grows like a weed!

Nice plant, Jim !!! Being unfamiliar with Hippeastrum it looks a whole lot like an Amaryllis to me, is it in the same family or something ?

The correct genus name is Hippeastrum. Amaryllis is a similar genus that's not so widely cultivated, and I believe that it's more tropical. Beyond that I don't know much, and I'm not sure though how Hippeastrum ended up with the common name of Amaryllis.
