He may be referring to the need for new roots to be growing when moving to sh as those are the roots that will adapt to the new environment.

Right! I move to S/H when new roots are no longer than 3/4 to 1 inch long.

If you do get yourself into a fix, with the medium going south and having to repot or risk losing the plant, you can avoid the "two months of sulking" Linda saw by putting the plants on a seedling heat mat. It really speeds up the root growth.
