Coelogyne Ovalis S/H

Hi,

I'm new to the site and i was looking for some info about planting a Coelogyne Ovalis in S/H. The plant is bare root i just resive it today by post, he have 4psb the last one if just forming out and would like to try it in S/H because for me it a time saver. I've read some post in the board but not much info on it. Is there someone that have some years behind in growing Coelogyne in S/H??

I have this. I put mine in a plastic vanda basket with lava rock and set this in a clear bowl. On the bottom of the clear bowl is gravel that is kept wet. I have been told they don't like fertilizer that has salt and like pure water. Mine was a string of leafless, rootless bulbs but it grew lots of new growths with new roots. I kept the lava rock wet until the leaves were completely grown out. I hope this helps.

My orchid is in bloom and has 3 buds...it is mounted on tree fern block...it is very prolific and could really grow into a specimen...S/H would not be advisable since you will have to repot it on a bigger container everytine the new bulbs grow out of the container...

And that is not advisable...why?

An in-home grower may find that a mounted plant might not be very easy to deal with, especially in a dry environment.

I was hoping a answer from you about this plan i search in your site and here and did find any info. Since you are the reference, in the french orchid forum for S/H, i was hoping you could help me on this plant. What would be your advise, do you think it will go well?

This is why i want it in a contener because the friend who send send it to me, the division come from a speciment that is mount on a cork slab and was growing out of the slab Like Ray say i dont have a green house or a specify room to grow the plant. the other orchid that i have a all most all in S/H and grow well. That is y i ask!!

Pretty much any plant can be grown in semi-hydroponics. it's just a matter of making the transition at a time when new roots are emerging that will tailor themselves to the new environment, and them making sure that other aspects of your environment will not throw things "out of whack" with what the plants want.

Sure, you want to contain the plant on S/H...you can do that too...but my point is: what will you do when the plant grows out of your S/H container? This plant cannot be contained it will grow out of anything and expand...did you see my picture? lets see the bark is your S/H container...so when the five other bulbs gets out of your container...then you will have to spray them anyways or keep on repotting on a bigger container...if you are lazy to water...I am very sure you are also lazy to repot.Ideally its nice to repot every 2 years...but with this plant youll just have to repot every 4 months...
Look at the picture of my plant...it refuses to stay put; it grew five bulbs just from last summer: imagine this plant in two years!...trust me, this will stray away from your S/H pot in 4 months and youll just have to repot...but I dont mind to repot on S/H every 4 months and flushing it twice a month...I dont know about you.
