Did you guys have new root growth when you made the switch? From what people say it seems like that is one of the main keys to success. You both have nice collections!

Sarah, it is vital that an orchid is showing signs of new root growth before repotting - otherwise it is resting. How many of us want to be disturbed when we are resting - same for orchids!

Of course there are exceptions such as emergency repotting, when you have to repot to save the plant.

I also have a cochleanthes amazonica in S/H and it blooms much more than it did in bark. I was hesitant to change that one over, because it is so large, but I am happy that I did.

I have all my paphs and phrags in it and they do great.... but I agree, it is not for everyone. They just happen to like my growing conditions in my home. I find it very easy and clean to grow them that way. The only problem is when they tip over, all those little buggers roll away. I still would rather pick up the S/H medium than bark mixture, it is not as dirty and messy on my carpet.

Thanks for sharing your info! Good to know. I have agree with you about the mess bark makes. I have 3 cats and from time to time an accident happens. Bits of bark and black charcoal dust on light colored carpet is NOT fun to clean up! I would rather chase around the s/h balls.
