Ideas for pots
Default Ideas for pots

Hello I am a poor college student and I really want to do S/H but I am finding it to be some what costly. Anyway I was at my garden supply store and noticed that they have a lot of those clear plastic drip trays, they range in size and shape. Alot of them are a little over 1 inch deep and I was wondering if I could just use some of my regular clay pots that have a hole in the bottom and set it in there and keep the tray filled with about an inch or so of water? Anyone have any ideas for pots?tupperware containers?

I think you would be better off making holes in those tall plastic food containers. Fill that with evenly sized gravel or the clay balls (as your budget will allow). Try to find some that are around the same size as those sold by Ray at first Rays Orchids.
Im not sure what silica stone is, but if its really small and compacts easily, then those are best for orchids with finer roots. Hope this helps.

Howdy Dafunk, let me see if i can shed some light being myself a student i know sometimes you have to dig under the bed to find money, so i go with tindomul on the plastic food containers, for S/H i use 1lt. clear plastic food containers with holes made on the side with a piece of very advanced equipment a.k.a. nail (heated over the stove), as for the media, you can use LECA (clay balls), gravel, pumice, lava rock, etc, go with the budget friendly, I use Hydrotron, here a 10 lt. bag is about 10 bucks or so, mayeb you´ll find it cheaper.
Respect
D.

For s/h containers, I use empty plastic food containers like large peanut butter containers and vinegar bottles.

Thanks for the reply's, I dont know what the silica stone is either I just saw it in the hydroponic section of my garden center, and it said great for orchids on it. It seemed kinda small around 1/4" to 1/2" chunks and very irregular in shape, looks like it would compact really bad, would it be worth it to order the primeagra, or will hydrotron be ok? If the PA is that much better I dont have a problem waiting to get that. I have a couple phals and a catt that I plan on switching over. Do you think a brassia caudata would do good in a S/H?

Default 'PET' recycling

You can use 'PET' (Polyethylene Therephthalate) soft drink containers, see these Catasetums in "s/h with media" (Alberto Villalobos cultivation, Mato Grosso, Brazil)
